IELTSライティングのマップ問題について
IELTS アカデミック ライティングのタスク1におけるテーマは主に以下の3つに分類できます。
- 図表の解析
- 都市の移り変わり（地図問題）
- プロセスマップ
地図問題は、約3割ぐらいの割合で出題されます。その地図問題の中でも、通常の地図問題とは違って、例外としてマップ上のロケーションを説明する問題が出題があります。出題頻度は低いですが、最近の傾向として、以前よりもよく見かけるようになりました。マップ問題は、対策を知らないと書きにくい問題です。
例題を確認してみましょう。
The map below is of the town of Garlsdon. A new supermarket (S) is planned for the town. The map shows two possible sites for the supermarket.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
【日本語訳】以下はGarlsdon townの地図である。新しいスーパーマーケット（S）の建設を計画している。地図には、スーパーマーケットの建設可能な場所を示している。
主な特徴をリポートし、比較しなさい。
この地図問題は、都市や公園などの移り変わりを表すのとは違って、
S1 （site 1 for a new supermarket）
S2 （site 2 for a new supermarket）
というロケーションの説明をします。
場所について説明する際は、以下のような表現が便利です。
| is located | 例：S1 is located in the north west of the town centre. |
| is situated | 例：S2 is situated in the town centre. |
| lies | 例：S1 lies north west of the town. |
| is | 例：S2 is （in/on）the north west of the town. |
また、マップには、道や鉄道、都市の人口、位置、方角などが示されています。こういった情報は「key」と呼ばれ、keyについては必ず書く必要があります。マップに「町の人口」の情報が記載されている場合は、こちらも忘れずに書きましょう。地図上に示されているものはライティングの中に盛り込まなくてはいけません。
今回のkey：
countryside
town centre
housing
industry
railways
main roads
ライティングだけでなく、他のセクションでも有効な言い換え表現。ライティングでは特に言い換えていく必要があります。
keyの言い換え例：
countryside = suburb
housing = residential area
その他に便利な表現としては、run through/cross/pass through/go throughなどがあります。
例文1：The railway run through the town centre from north to south.
例文2：The main road goes through the town centre.
問題のマップ上に人口が書かれている場合は、the population is/is populatedという表現を使って説明しましょう。こちらもkeyですが、書かれていないこともあります。
例文3：The population of the town is 60.000.
例文4：60.000 people are populated the region.
例文5：~Toronto, which has a population of 60.000.

Garlsdon town マップ問題 解答例
The map shows two potential locations (S1 and S2) for a new supermarket in a town called Garlsdon.
The main difference between the two sites is that S1 is outside the town, whereas S2 is in the town centre. The sites can also be compared in terms of access by road or rail, and their positions relative to three smaller towns.
Looking at the information in more detail, S1 is in the countryside to the north west of Garlsdon, but it is close to the residential area of the town. S2 is also close to the housing area, which surrounds the town centre.
There are main roads from Hindon, Bransdon and Cransdon to Garlsdon town centre, but this is a no traffic zone, so there would be no access to S2 by car. By contrast, S1 lies on the main road to Hindon, but it would be more difficult to reach from Bransdon and Cransdon. Both supermarket sites are close to the railway that runs through Garlsdon from Hindon to Cransdon.
