IELTSリスニングの地図問題は、出題頻度が高く、セクション2の後半部分で頻出しています。
最近では、質問応対形式の出題が増加している傾向がありますが、地図問題も必ず対策を行いましょう。
この記事では、地図問題の対策と、例題および解説を紹介していきます。
IELTSリスニングのマップ問題の対処法
IELTSリスニングの地図問題では、位置関係に関する問題が、次の2パターンで出題されます。
- 起点の位置が変わるパターン
- いつも一定の位置が起点となるパターン
起点が一定のパターンは、例えば会場のレセプションを拠点に、何がどこにあるかを問われます。
起点が変わるパターンでは、1つ前の問題の場所や、あるストリートを起点にして、次の場所を示すよう問われます。
あらかじめ問題に目を通す
どちらのパターンでも、読み上げられたストリート名などの固有名詞を、地図上で素早く見つけることが重要です。
リスニングが始まる前の20～30秒間で、どのストリートや建物がどこにあるのか、付近には何があるのかを、ある程度把握しておきましょう。
あらかじめ地図に目を通しておくことで、素早く場所を見つけることができます。
地図問題の例題
ここでは、2つの出題パターンの例題と解説をそれぞれ紹介していきます。

middle and School Road on the right. Now, we already have a set of traffic lights in the High
Street at the junction with Station Road, but we’re planning to have another set at the other

We’ ve decided we definitely need a pedestrian crossing. We considered putting this on
School Road, just outside the school, but in the end we decided that could lead to a lot of
traffic congestion, so we decided to locate it on the High Street, crossing the road in front of
the supermarket. That’s a very busy area, so it should help things there.
We’re proposing some changes to parking. At present, parking isn’ t allowed on the High
Street outside the library. But we’re going to change that and allow parking there, but not at
the other end of the High Street near School Road.
There’ II be a new No Parking sign on School Road just by the entrance to the school,
forbidding parking for 25 metres. This should improve visibility for drivers and pedestrians,
especially on the bend just to the north of the school.

解答のポイント
地図問題では、次のポイントに注意して聞き取り、解答を行いましょう。
- リスニングが始まる前に地図を見て、どこに何があるかをある程度把握しておく
- 問われている場所の付近に何があるかを必ず確認する
- ひっかけ表現に注意する
- 次の設問に移動したサインを聞き逃さない
次の設問に移動するサイン
話題が違う内容に移る際に、「トランジションワード」または「トランジションフレーズ」という表現が使われます。
この表現が使用されたら、話題が切り替わったサインですので、聞き逃さないように注意しましょう。
このサインを逃してしまうと、話題の転換に気づけず、立て続けにミスをしてしまうことにもつながります。

トランジションワードとして「IF」が使用され、話題が全く違う内容に切り替わることがあります。

方向を表す英単語
英語圏では、地図上の4方向は上下左右ではなく、north（北）、south（南）、west（西）、east（東）で表します。
IELTSリスニング マップ問題 まとめ
IELTSのマップ問題は、対策を行えば、決して難しい問題ではありません。
リスニングが始まる20～30秒の間に、「どの通りがどこにあるのか」を把握しておくことで、音声の聞き逃しが少なくなります。また、どの位置を起点としているかにも注目しましょう。
