言い換え表現を使用できると、IELTSの全セクションでスコアアップにつながります。特に、ライティングでは極めて重要です。
この記事では、タスク1とタスク2で使用できる、言い換え表現の例をいくつか紹介します。
問題文の言い換え表現(パラフレーズ)
パラフレーズ(Paraphrase)とは、同じ意味の言葉や文章を、違う語句で言い換えることです。
日本語ではパラフレーズをする文化はあまりありませんが、英語では同じ言葉や表現を繰り返すことを嫌い、「repetition(反復)」として減点対象になります。
そのため、タスク1、タスク2ともに問題文のパラフレーズを行うことが重要で、イントロダクションに記述します。
言い換え・パラフレーズの3つのパターン
パラフレーズは、元の文章をより詳細に言い換えるため、文全体は元の文章よりも長くなります。
言い換えを行う際は、以下の点に注意しましょう。
- 冗長的になりすぎない
- トピックを絞りすぎない
- 文章の意味を変えてしまわない
特に、正確にパラフレーズすることは重要なので、文章の意味が変わらないように気を付けましょう。
パラフレーズのパターン
文章の意味を変えずに、正確に文語的な表現に言い換えることは、高度な知識を必要とします。
しかし、一定のパターンを覚えておき、用語の引き出しを持っておくことで、言い換え表現に時間を費やさず、スムーズに解答できます。
ここでは、初級編、中級編、上級編の3に分け、パラフレーズのパターンを紹介します。
初級編
初級編は、単語単位の言い換えを行うパターンです。文の順序を変える場合も含みます。

中級編
中級編は文単位で言い換え、文章全体の構造を変えるパターンです。

上級編
上級編は、課題の意味を把握し、ジェネラルセンテンスやアカデミックな表現・用語など、巧みな表現を駆使するパターンです。
※ジェネラルセンテンスとは、導入文の役割を果たします。課題に対して、最近の傾向や確実な事実を提示することで、スムーズな書き出しを実現できます。単語や用語が一段と高度でアカデミックになります。

タスク1の例題とパラフレーズ例5選
タスク1のイントロダクションでは、言い換え表現はパターンが決まっているため、使い回しができます。
単語単位での言い換えでも十分で、「show」➡「illustrate/compare」等が代表的です。
特に、リポート形式では高度なパラフレーズは必要ないため、ここでは初級と中上級の2パターンを紹介します。
